Etanercept Enbrel®

A recombinant human tumour necrosis factor receptor–Fc fusion protein used across immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Inter-individual exposure variability and the need to distinguish drug concentration from immunogenicity make etanercept an established subject of biological-drug monitoring research. Two SHIKARI® assays address complementary free-drug and anti-drug antibody questions for the originator and biosimilars.

Scientific Background

Why Etanercept is relevant to biological-drug monitoring research

Etanercept has clinically important target biology, indication-specific dosing and measurable systemic exposure, making drug concentration and immunogenicity relevant research variables. Scientific source ↗ · EMA source ↗

Mechanism

Molecular Target & Structure

Etanercept is a dimeric soluble TNF-receptor-2 Fc fusion protein that binds TNF and reduces TNF-receptor signalling. Source ↗

Indications

Approved Indications

EMA-authorised uses include rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and plaque psoriasis in defined adult and paediatric populations. EMA source ↗

Regulatory PK Context

Steady-State Exposure

Because a universal therapeutic trough target is not established, regulator PK data provide a regimen-specific reference:

RA · 50 mg once weekly Cmax2.4 ± 1.5 µg/mL
RA · 50 mg once weekly Cmin1.2 ± 0.7 µg/mL
Plaque psoriasis · reported trough1.5 ± 0.7 µg/mL

Regulatory exposure values are regimen- and population-specific and are not therapeutic targets. Values vary with dose, timing, formulation and study population. This page is for RUO product information and does not provide clinical guidance.

Kit Selection Guide

Which kit fits your research question?

Each analytical question in biological-drug monitoring research maps to a distinct assay type.

01
Quantify free etanercept
Use ETA-FD-ENB for quantitative measurement of free etanercept in human serum or plasma, including trough-level and pharmacokinetic research.
02
Detect anti-etanercept antibodies
Use ETA-QLS-ENB for qualitative determination of anti-etanercept antibodies in human serum or plasma.
03
Study concentration and immunogenicity together
Use both assays when a study protocol requires paired free-drug and ADA results. Interpret each result within the validated protocol and the study design; the page does not define clinical decision rules.
04
Compare originator and biosimilar samples
The manufacturer lists SHIKARI® ELISA kits as suitable for biosimilar work. Confirm that the planned matrix, sampling schedule and analytical performance requirements match the current kit documentation.
05
Use a non-human matrix
Both official product records specify human serum and plasma. Contact Matrix Biotek before using another species or matrix; cross-reactivity and matrix effects require study-specific verification.
06
Need help selecting the assay
Send the research question, sample matrix and expected concentration range through the technical-support route for a product-focused response.
